The Name
Madras Management Association was founded as The Madras Institute of Management (MIM) in August 1956 with the objective of furthering management development under the able presidentship of Dr. A. Lakshmanaswamy Mudaliar, the illustrious Vice-Chancellor of Madras University. MIM was formally inaugurated with twenty institutional members on September 19, 1956. It became part of the national level management body, The All India Management Association, when the later was formed in 1957, and was renamed The Madras Management Association in conformity with the names of other similar institutions.

The Madras Institute of Management (MIM) was formally inaugurated on September 19, 1956 by Mr JM Srinagesh, ICS, General Manager, Hindustan Aircraft Pvt Ltd, under the chairmanship of the Hon'ble Minister of Finance Mr C Subramaniam. On the inaugural day there were 20 institutional members.

Dr. Sir A L Mudaliar, Vice Chancellor, University of Madras, was the first President of the MIM. He and the nine founder members given above along with V. Ramachandran, Industrial Relations Officer, Burmah - Shell, Madras constituted the first Managing Committee of MIM.
